Background on Establishing a Time Line
From here, you can download the 2000 Election Time Line template to get you started on putting together an Election Time Line for your community. Please remember this is a sample. You will need to do some research to find out what the deadlines are for your community and state.

Public Official Positions
The 2000 Election time line was based upon the upcoming elections for this year. The information can be obtained by contacting your County Clerk's office. In Michigan, the County Clerk handles election information as it relates to federal, state, county and township governments.

In Michigan, city commission/council elections are determined by the City's Charter. You will need to contact your City Clerk for petition filing deadlines and the election date. In Battle Creek, our city commission is nonpartisan so there is not a primary election.

School Board Positions
In Michigan, school board terms (4 years term that starts on July 1st) are staggered. A school board member is a 4-year term that starts on July 1st of the election year.
In Michigan, school board elections are held each year by the school district. You will need to contact the specific school district you are interested in to see when the petitions are available, petition filing deadline, and election date.

In Michigan, school board petition filing deadline is no later than 4 p.m. on the ninth Monday preceding the date of the election. School board elections are held on the second Monday in June.

Planning Program Sessions
The 2000 election time line was developed in November of 1999. Some of the information may have to wait until the next year begins depending upon your community and state election's bureau.

Below, you can download fax templates that the Chamber sent out requesting the information on various local elected and school board positions for the upcoming year. Once the information is collected and compiled, our Candidate Development Committee met to schedule the session dates for the candidate school year.

The Committee looked at various factors when determining what day of the week to hold each session such as meetings of local units of government, school boards, service clubs, church functions, etc. You'll want to take all these factors in consideration along with filing deadlines to determine your meeting dates. Our Chamber backed up all program dates BEFORE the filing deadline so participants could make an informed decision prior to candidate filing deadline.

As mentioned in the introductory letter, the Chamber did conduct a consolidated session following the state primary (or filing deadline if city council/commission positions) for candidates whose names will appear on the ballot in November. The consolidated session allowed us to meet the candidates who were running. It also provided an opportunity for the candidate(s) to receive the information if they had not previously participated. All candidates were extended an open invitation to attend. The consolidated session was held toward the end of August, again so the candidate would have the information early. A template invitation is available for download from August of 1999.

The Chamber did not conduct a consolidated session for school board candidates.
